Plexiform Mucinous Schwannoma

Plexiform Mucinous Schwannoma occur in soft tissues and often appear in the head and neck. It is rarely malignant.

Slide 1: 50 year-old man with a lobulated lesion. The biopsy shows multiple nodules within the deeper dermis and subcutis that appear encapsulated.
Slide 2: There is extensive mucin deposition really resulting in a myxomatous mucinous spindle cell lesion.
Slide 3: The cells exhibit a distinct Verocay body-like arrangement.
Slide 4: In examining the cells under higher magnification they have elongate nuclei with a finely dispersed chromatin.  The cytoplasms are eosinophilic and fibrillar in quality.  This lesion is without significant atypicality.
Slide 5: The lesion is extensively highlighted by S-100.
Slide 6: S100 in the Verocay body-like arrangements. The findings are highly characteristic for a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor. The lesion is growing within nerves in a multinodular fashion.
